Byzantine & Ottoman Archaeology

Digging up answers in the Medieval Mediterranean

The Project

The VIDI-Research Project Material Culture, Consumption and Social Change aims to provide a new archaeological approach to the material culture of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires in the eastern Mediterranean (from the 7th to the 20th centuries). The project explores patterns of consumption and networks of production and trade to study economic and social interaction within each Empire, as well as among the different cultures active in the Medieval and Post-Medieval Mediterranean (Byzantine- Frankish/Crusader- Ottoman).
